Telegram fined for failing to remove banned content

Telegram Messenger was fined four million rubles (US$41,400) by a Moscow court for refusing to remove information banned in Russia.

According to the court’s press service, Telegram was found guilty of an administrative offense for failing to “delete information when such deletion is required by Russian law.”

The court did not specify the prohibited information that led to the fine.

Telegram was fined four million rubles in August 2024 for a similar offense.

With around 900 million subscribers, Telegram is today one of the leading messaging platforms in the world and influential in Russia.
