How to protect your plants

Prepare Rochester. It may feel like fall, but it will be much colder since the National Weather Service in Buffalo has issued a frost advisory for much of the Rochester area.

The advisory covers much of Western New York, including Rochester, Buffalo and Syracuse, and marks the first frost advisory of the season in Rochester, said Heather Kenyon, a weather service meteorologist. Temperatures are expected to drop to between 30C and 30C overnight, she said.

“This is just a taste of what’s to come,” Kenyon said.

Frost Advisory Issued for Upstate New York

The advisory runs from 8 p.m. Wednesday to 10 a.m. Thursday and covers Monroe, Ontario, Wayne, Genesee, Orleans, Livingston, Wyoming, Erie, Niagara, northern Cayuga, Oswego and Chautauqua counties.

Areas south of the Thruway will see the coldest temperatures, she said. The city of Rochester is only expected to dip into the mid-30s, while communities along the shores of Lake Ontario are expected to be closer to 40. Some places in the colder valleys could even dip into the 20s, forecasters said. The normal low for mid-October in Rochester is 43 degrees, according to the weather service.

But this cooling should be short-lived, she believes. Warmer temperatures are ahead with highs forecast near 60 Thursday and Friday and in the upper 60s Saturday and 70 Sunday through early next week, Kenyon said. The normal high in Rochester in mid-October is 61.

How to Protect Plants During a Frost Warning

Forecasters recommend that area residents cover tender plants overnight to protect them from potential frost.
