Woman raises alarm by calling boyfriend during Epsom home invasion and suspected kidnapping

The woman told him she was home alone at the time, talking to her boyfriend on the phone when she heard a big “bang” coming from downstairs.

He said she heard voices and immediately told her boyfriend to call the police before abruptly ending the conversation and finding a hiding place.

The resident said she escaped without serious injuries.

She was very grateful that she had called her boyfriend and that the police had arrived quickly.

While waiting for the police to arrive, she feared the worst would happen, the neighbor revealed.

At one point, she thought she might have been raped or murdered, he said.

The resident said it was usually a “very quiet” street, but there had been another break-in on a nearby street a few weeks ago.

He was concerned about the recent increase in crime and was now “more vigilant”.

Four men – aged 18, 20, 22 and 23 – appeared in the Auckland District Court this week on charges of kidnapping and burglary. They are all due to appear in court again on November 5.

Detective Senior Sergeant Martin Friend said a 16-year-old man had also been charged with kidnapping and burglary.

Earlier, police said they were called to an address on Coronation Rd in Epsom just after midnight.

“We received a worrying report that a group of men were attempting to force their way into a house.

“The men allegedly forced entry and presented weapons to an occupant at the address, holding them against their will.”

The group also allegedly stole some personal items, including jewelry, he added.

“Police officers rushed to the scene and disturbed the alleged attackers, who attempted to flee in two vehicles.”

Police prevented a suspected offender from leaving the scene.

“All the alleged perpetrators were ultimately taken into custody.”

“It was a frightening experience for the victim, who fortunately was not injured during the incident,” Friend said.

“Support is being provided to them and we hope that these arrests will also bring them some comfort. »

Police said they were limited in their comments because the matter was now before the courts.
