Grey’s Anatomy writer Elisabeth Finch apologizes for lies

Elizabeth Finch released a statement following Peacock’s premiere of Anatomy of lyinga three-part documentary series about how she exploited years of lies about her own life to become a writer for ABC. Grey’s Anatomy.

The docuseries, which debuted on streaming platform Peacock on Tuesday, detailed how Finch faked cancer after his TV writing career plateaued. But after writing articles online about her fake health problems – starting with a rare bone cancer – she began to attract attention from all the Hollywood shows that had previously passed her over for her work. One of these shows was Grey’s Anatomybut when she presented this tragic battle with cancer combined with a mission of strength and resilience, production took note and hired her.

But his lies only increased. Eventually, she lied about having to have an abortion while undergoing cancer treatment. She also lied about knowing someone who was killed at Tree of Life Synagogue. When the #MeToo movement emerged, she wrote in The Hollywood Reporter about an anonymous director on The Vampire Diaries who sexually harassed her. (This article was later removed from the site.) If that wasn’t bad enough, she checked herself into inpatient psychiatric treatment, claiming she suffered from PTSD as a result of the shooting. There, she met a vulnerable woman whom she would eventually marry – after imitating her symptoms of PTSD.

Many of Finch’s fabricated life stories have inspired episodes of Grey’s Anatomyincluding the 2015 episode about a sexual assault victim, “Silent All These Years.” The documentary included a note that Finch claimed the episode was inspired by the Senate judicial hearings for then-Supreme Court nominee Donald Trump. Bret Kavanaugh. His cancer story was used for a character played by Debbie Allen.

Finch’s story fell apart when his wife, Jennifer Beyerapproached Vanity Fair with Finch’s model of dishonesty. Finch was placed on leave from Grey’s Anatomy and finally resigned.

Now that Finch’s story has reached its largest audience yet, she has spoken out in an Instagram post (with comments turned off), apologizing for everything. It reads, in part:

I have not given anyone any reason to believe what I say. I lied so much; things that have devastated so many people in real life. “I’m sorry” seems like the smallest words compared to what I did, but they are the truest ones. …

The truth is that there is no excuse, no justification – nothing can ever justify my lies to anyone. Nothing erases the trauma I caused – the fear, the pain, the anger, the tears, the time. And nothing matters more to me than holding myself accountable in every way. I will continue to undo whatever damage I can and make sure I don’t do the worst things I did. I recognize that it will take time for people to believe it.

Evguenia Peretzwho wrote the Vanity Fair exhibited and was co-producer on Anatomy of lyingtold Variety on Tuesday: “We heard clips of her reaching out to people who are still inquiring about jobs. We heard she has something in the works regarding her life.
