Biden agency sends direct message to criminal immigrants after explosive data becomes admin’s responsibility

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) this week warned noncitizen felons with felony convictions that they will “lose the privilege” of being in the United States — in the type of strong language rarely used by the Biden administration.

“Noncitizens convicted of a crime lose the privilege of being in the United States,” ICE’s Office of Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) in New York said Tuesday.

This statement comes as she announces multiple arrests in New York, a sanctuary city that limits cooperation with ICE detainees. These detainees are requesting that ICE be notified of the release of a potentially deportable suspect so that he or she can be placed in ICE custody. This means ICE agents must go out into the community to make arrests of immigrant criminals.

The ICE report notes the arrest of a 45-year-old Jamaican citizen convicted of forcible touching and a 34-year-old Guatemalan man convicted of illegal reentry. Officers also arrested a 38-year-old Dominican citizen accused of sexual misconduct and “criminal sexual act.”

The Biden administration has said it is prioritizing threats to public safety and national security as part of its narrow enforcement priorities. However, he has been criticized for a sharp drop in evictions compared to the previous administration.

Recently, the deportation of criminals has come under scrutiny after figures showed that among people facing deportation proceedings but not in ICE custody, there are 425,431 convicted criminals. This is up from around 405,000 in June 2021 and 368,000 in April 2016.
