Emma Hayes names USWNT team for first matches since winning Olympic gold

Trinity Rodman will miss three upcoming games for the United States women’s national soccer team as she continues to recover from a back injury.

Coach Emma Hayes announced her roster Thursday for the games against Iceland on Oct. 24 in Austin, Texas, and Oct. 27 in Nashville. The Americans will next host Argentina on October 30 in Louisville, Kentucky.

These are the United States’ first matches since winning gold at the Paris Olympics. The squad includes 18 members of the team that played in France.

“There’s no doubt it’s been a brilliant summer, and we want to make these three games a celebration of incredible achievements and players, but at the same time we can’t rest on laurels,” Hayes said in a press release. “We are focused on the future, on our process and we want to continue to aim for new heights.”

Hayes has called 26 players for camp, but he will field 23 for each game.

Rodman, who plays for the Washington Spirit in the National Women’s Soccer League, suffered an intense back spasm that caused her to leave the field in a wheelchair during a game against the Kansas City Current last month.

She was a substitute in the Spirit’s win last weekend against Racing Louisville, playing for the first time since her injury.

Hayes included six players who could debut for the United States: midfielder Hal Hershfelt, defender Emily Sams, central defender Eva Gaetino, defender Alyssa Malonson, forward Yazmeen Ryan and forward Emma Sears.

The team will honor veteran defender Kelley O’Hara during a halftime retirement ceremony in Nashville.
