Ranchi Municipal Corporation: RMC unveils plans to tackle traffic congestion by regulating street vending in Ranchi | Ranchi News

RMC prepares plans to decongest the roads

Ranchi: Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC) launched an initiative to regulate street sales activities aimed at responding traffic jam problems in the state capital. The move responds to growing concerns about the impact of unregulated sales on urban mobility and traffic flow. The RMC has identified three locations – Purulia Road, near Yogda Satsang police station and near Surendra Cemetery School – and prepared a detailed project report (DPR) for the initiative.
The DPR outlines the RMC’s objectives, which include improving traffic management, ensuring suppliers comply with regulations, and creating a cleaner, more organized environment for sellers and consumers. The company also conducts awareness campaigns to inform sellers about regulations and the importance of respecting designated areas.
Nikesh Kumar, the deputy administrator, said, “The RMC has identified specific vending zones across the city. This decision is based on a detailed project report (DPR) which describes the logistics and benefits of the designated sales areas. By moving vendors from vending-free zones, the initiative seeks to create a more organized and efficient cityscape.
Gini Kumari, a resident of Sujata Chowk, highlighted the challenges the city is facing due to traffic jams caused by street vendors. She said: “Traffic jams caused by street vendors have long been a challenge for the city. Many sellers set up their stores in high-traffic areas, blocking roads and sidewalks, often leading to traffic jams and delays for motorists and pedestrians alike.
Nikesh Kumar highlighted that the initiative is not only aimed at reducing traffic congestion but also supporting local entrepreneurs while ensuring safe and accessible roads for all.
In addition to the three sites already identified, the RMC has identified six other sites – Bariatu, Rims, ITI, Hinoo, Mecon and Birsa Chowk – which will be transformed into designated sales areas. The RMC is currently in the process of obtaining No Objection Certificates (NOCs) from the relevant authorities to facilitate this expansion.
The initiative also includes plans for infrastructure improvements in identified vending areas, such as better waste management facilities and equipment to support vendors.
