Heavy rains cause deadly floods in northern Italy

ROME

Severe storms and heavy rain caused widespread flooding and flash flooding in northern regions of Italy, resulting in the death of one person and significant disruption in the Liguria and Tuscany regions.

Intense downpours in these areas in recent days have caused rivers and streams to overflow, with national media reporting several landslides on higher ground.

In Liguria alone, more than 200 millimeters (7.9 inches) of rain fell in 18 hours on October 16, while parts of Tuscany were flooded after receiving 100 millimeters of rain in just an hour.

Bad weather left several cities, including Genoa, Rapallo, Savona and Chiavari in Liguria, as well as Livorno and Siena in Tuscany, struggling with water damage and transport chaos.

A red alert has been issued for the Entella and Magra rivers in Liguria due to the high risk of flooding. Residents in affected areas have been urged to take precautions and stay home, with local authorities monitoring the situation closely.

A 75-year-old hiker was killed after being swept away by floodwaters in a wooded area.

The heavy rain also caused significant structural damage, with images circulating on social media showing floodwaters surging over the Sori Bridge in Genoa, creating a waterfall-like torrent.

In Siena, water flooded the station, submerging tracks and disrupting services, while Florence’s tram lines were damaged by torrential downpours.

In response, authorities closed primary and secondary schools in the worst-affected areas to ensure the safety of students.

The Civil Protection Department has issued warnings in Liguria and Tuscany, advising residents to avoid non-essential travel and remain vigilant as weather conditions continue to pose risks.
