Two men have been handed a three-year ban from football for hateful comments posted online and offensive chants during a match. Steven Dodd and Barnaby Dodsworth appeared in court this week for sentencing.

On Wednesday October 16, Stephen Dodd, 44, of Old Swan, pleaded guilty to publishing malicious communications between December 2023 and January this year. Dodd was identified as posting discriminatory and hateful tweets on X, formerly known as Twitter, that were homophobic, hostile toward people with disabilities and chanting tragedies.


He was sentenced to a three-year football banning order, a 12-month community order and fines at South Sefton Magistrates’ Court.

Barnaby Dodsworth, 50, from Sheffield, was found guilty of using threatening and abusive words during the Liverpool v Sheffield United match at Anfield on April 4. He was heard shouting homophobic slurs which caused distress to those attending the match.


On October 2, South Sefton Magistrates’ Court also imposed a three-year football ban on him. Another man, John Gill, was also convicted of a football-related crime.

Gill, 50, from Fazakerley, scammed two supporters out of “significant sums of money” by selling them fake tickets outside Anfield Stadium for Liverpool Football Club’s match against Wolverhampton Wanderers on May 19. Gill pleaded guilty to fraud and was sentenced to 17 years in prison. weeks in prison and fined him at Liverpool Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday October 15.

Chief Inspector Iain Wyke said: “This type of behavior displayed by Dodd, Gill and Dodsworth has no place in football. Dodd and Dodsworth have each received football banning orders for hateful comments posted online and offensive chants during a match which caused distress to others, which is completely unacceptable.“This ban now prevents them from attending any football matches in the country. While Gill defrauded fans of large sums of money by selling them fake tickets outside the stadium, he is now spending time in prison. I hope these convictions send a clear message and deter others from taking you to court to be prosecuted.
