The first trapping seasons of the fall will open on Saturday, October 19. Additional seasons for other species and areas will continue to open throughout the fall. Trappers are encouraged to check season dates, trapping regulations and ensure they have all required permits before heading out.

During these times, the DNR said others going outdoors should be aware that traps may be present on public lands. To minimize the risk of encountering a trap, people should stay on designated trails and keep their pets on a leash.

The DNR said modern trapping practices are based on thorough evaluations of commercially available traps and common trapping methods, commonly referred to as “best management practices.” Assessments include comprehensive measures on animal welfare, selectivity, practicality and safety.

All new trappers must complete an approved trapper training course, unless they are trapping under the youth supervised option, a supervised trapping program, or other exemptions. Classes, taught by experienced trappers, cover basic trapping skills, trapping regulations, safety and ethics.

For those just starting out, the DNR offers beginner programs, such as Women’s Trap Camp and Youth Trap Camp, allowing new trappers to learn in a safe and supportive atmosphere.

As a reminder, the DNR has stated that trapping seasons in a particular area may close before the designated closure date if the harvest quota for a specific species is reached. Trappers can visit the DNR trapping webpage for area status updates and more information about trapping in Wisconsin.
