Revised Haason Reddick deal raises questions about waivable fines

The deal was closed fairly quickly. Understanding its nuances will likely take more time.

According to a source with knowledge of Haason Reddick’s revised contract, if Reddick agrees to honor his deal for the remainder of the season, the Jets will forgo more than $12 million in fines.

Reddick will not receive back pay for the eight weeks he missed. The $12 million includes bonus money he lost by missing training camp and eight regular-season games. It also includes fines for missed preseason games, in the amount of one regular season game check ($791,667) for each of the three preparatory games missed.

Regarding fines for pre-season match testing, there is apparently an unresolved question (which has developed into a formal grievance) as to whether they can be waived. The Jets are willing to waive it, if the league and the NFL Players Association agree it can be waived. (The issue, as we currently understand it, is whether the trade that sent Reddick from the Eagles to the Jets exempts the contract from the limited range of deals carrying non-voidable fines.)

As for the $2 million in daily training camp fines, those won’t (and probably can’t) be waived. However, Reddick can make that money back through incentives.

We don’t know who worked the hardest to achieve this. However, the one big difference is that before coach Robert Saleh was fired, owner Woody Johnson was not directly involved in the situation. After Saleh was fired, Woody became very involved. This suggests the Jets did something they wouldn’t do before to get the deal done.

Either way, we hope to get a full analysis of the new deal to better understand how it will work. This may require a complete reading of the final contract in order to better understand the situation.
