Storm Ashley: Road closed due to fallen trees as strong winds hit Scotland

  • Storm Ashley will bring winds up to 70 mph
  • Road in Moray closed due to fallen trees on the roadway
  • Several train services delayed and canceled across Scotland
  • Met Office weather alert in place until 9am

A road has been closed in both directions due to falling trees on the carriageway in Moray.

Traffic Scotland confirmed the A95 at Ballindalloch remained closed due to fallen trees on the carriageway at 6.25am.

Diversions are in place as crews continue to clear the road.

The closure comes as the first named storm of the season, Storm Ashley, continues to hit parts of Scotland in windy conditions.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for wind which came into force on Sunday and will last until 9am on Monday.

Winds of up to 70mph are expected, with the Met Office adding there is a “low risk” of danger to life from flying debris and large waves on the coast.

Forecasters expect gusts of 50 to 60 mph reaching 70 mph in exposed areas.

He added: “Gusts of 50-60mph are expected to continue around Orkney and Shetland before easing as Ashley moves away.”

Train services were also affected by the storm, with some ScotRail services on the West Highland Line as well as to Inverness cancelled.

The train operator also warned passengers to expect delays on services to Ayrshire, Dumfries and Galloway.

On Sunday afternoon, Network Rail Scotland shared X-ray video of waves breaching the sea wall near Saltcoats, Ayrshire, affecting the nearby train line and making “train running unsafe until conditions are improving.”

A man, a woman and a young boy were rescued from the waters on Aberdeen beach on Sunday.

Officers urged the public not to frequent the beach due to “exceptional” weather conditions, caused by the presence of large waves.
