CHRISTUS Health talks mammograms, new genetic tests and breast cancer regulations

CHRISTUS Southeast Texas Health System highlights the importance of early detection, mammograms, new genetic testing and regulations during Breast Cancer Awareness Month and throughout the year.

The American Cancer Society says more than 300,000 new cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed in women this year.

It is recommended that women begin having annual mammograms at age 40. Women at higher risks are encouraged to start screenings earlier.

CHRISTUS health officials say “risk factors include a family history of breast cancer, especially with two or more first- or second-degree family members diagnosed with breast cancer, certain predisposing genetic syndromes to several cancers and increased breast density.
