A group of former Bangladesh Chhatra League leaders yesterday staged a demonstration in Dhaka to protest against the arrest warrant issued against Awami League president Sheikh Hasina and demanded immediate withdrawal of cases against the former Prime Minister.

They took out a protest march in front of the Awami League central office on Bangabandhu Avenue in Gulistan on Monday morning.

Former BCL deputy secretary general Anwar Hossain said: “Sheikh Hasina was forced to leave the country.”

He said they were protesting “the injustice against him with many false accusations” and demanded that the complaints be immediately withdrawn.

Sheikh Hasina resigned as prime minister and fled the country on August 5 after the student-led mass uprising led to the ouster of her Awami League government. After this, the party central office, Dhanmondi office and other party offices across the country were vandalized.

Since then, more than two hundred complaints have been registered against Sheikh Hasina for murder of students and people during the July-August violence within the student movement.

Earlier on October 17, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for 54 people, including Sheikh Hasina.

She was ordered to be arrested and produced in court by November 18.

Also present in the procession were former BCL deputy general secretary Jasim Uddin, public education secretary Abu Abbas Bhuiyan, Awami League member Swechasebak Sheikh Muhammad Jamal Hossain, former BCL leaders Enamul Haque, Hasan Ahmed Khan, MM Nazmul Hasan, Sohel Rana, Parveen Mishu, Labani Chowdhury and Md Hasan, among others.
