Disabled woman banned from all UK ASDAs after argument with store staff over her assistance dog

A disabled woman has been banned from all Asdas in the UK after an argument with store staff over her assistance dog.

Elanor Maxey, 32, was told she could not take her dog Genie into any branch of the supermarket after an argument with one of the store’s security guards in Bexleyheath.

The woman claimed she was called “rude” by the female member of staff and told she was breaking data protection law by recording the incident.

Asda has since apologized to Ms Maxey and reversed the decision to exclude her.

Sharing the ordeal on social media, Ms Maxey said: “Today Genie and I were officially banned from all @Asdas in Britain simply because I didn’t present his ‘service number’ (something that doesn’t exist).

“I was also asked for my dog license… something that never existed in my lifetime! They also claim that I was rude (everything is recorded) and that I broke data protection law by recording staff.

Shocking footage recorded by Ms Maxey shows her interaction with the security guard, who allegedly tried to snatch her phone after realizing she was being recorded.

The disabled woman then asks the worker to move away from her because the heated interaction is hurting her back.

An Asda spokesperson said: “We have apologized to Ms Maxey for her experience at our Bexleyheath store.

“This falls short of the welcoming culture we seek at Asda.

“We are clear that assistance dogs are welcome in all of our stores and will remind our colleagues of this policy as a matter of urgency.”

Expressing their outrage on social media, viewers of Ms Maxey’s post defended the disabled woman, writing: “Bexleyheath Asda security lady behaved abominably towards a disabled woman and her dog.”

A second wrote: “WOW, the Bexleyheath incident is simply amazing to watch.” They added: “WOW. Speechless.’
