The worlds of “Marmadesam” and “Aindham Vedham” are similar: Naga

Shortly before the 1000 episode Tamil TV serials, a new concept with a gripping treatment was encapsulated in just 80-100 episodes with Marmadesam. After pioneering the miniseries concept, writer-director Naga enters familiar territory with his upcoming web series. Aindham Vedham for Zee5. The series will begin airing on October 25.

In this exclusive conversation with CE, Naga talks about the parallels between Marmadesam And Aindham Vedhamhis view of spirituality, the need for a scientific temperament, the way he writes, and much more.

Excerpts:

How did you think about combining science and spirituality in your projects?

I owe it to my education. My maternal parents are non-believers, while the opposite is true on my paternal side. I have had both experiences. I am neither dismissive nor unconditionally obedient to age-old practices. I wish to explore the scientific relevance of these practices. Vidathu Karuppu’s Dr Reena, who keeps raising questions out of curiosity, is a reflection of my character.

Did the actors find it difficult to understand the niche concept of Aindham Vedham?

I’m always open to making changes based on an actor’s abilities. I don’t force actors to meet my expectations. I try to find a happy medium between what the actor could offer and what I expect.

Being a student at the film institute, was television your natural choice? Do you regret not having made many films?

I haven’t done many TV series either (laughs). When I graduated, television was the next big thing. It was full of opportunities. What excited me was the challenge of keeping viewers hooked in the span of two episodes, which was a week back then. I was in the right place at the right time, so I have no regrets, regardless.

What was the influence of writer Indhira Soundarrajan on your projects?

I wrote short stories and poems when I was a student. Indhira sir had a huge influence on me in Marmadesam. The Ragasiyam series was based on the story of Indhira sir; he ends it in a village as a story of revenge. I took it to an urban environment.
