IIT Guwahati Scholarships for UG and PG Students: Check Eligibility Criteria, Benefits and Other Details Here

For many, especially those from a science background, getting admission into an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) is a dream. India has 23 IITs, but getting access to them is not an easy task. Every year, thousands of students appear for the JEE Mains and Advanced exams, and among them, only a few thousand seats are assured in the IITs. Among these prestigious institutions is the Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati. In the NIRF 2024 ranking, IIT Guwahati secured 9th position in the engineering category, cementing its reputation as one of the best institutes in the country.
However, admission to IIT Guwahati is not only difficult but can also be expensive. To support students, IIT Guwahati offers several scholarship programs. In this article, we will explore the different scholarships available for undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) students at IIT Guwahati.
IIT Guwahati offers the following scholarships:

  • Institute Merit Scholarship (IMS)
  • Merit-and-means (McM) scholarships from the Institute
  • SC-ST Scholarships

Institute Merit Scholarships (IMS):

IMS is available to B.Tech., B.Des., M.Sc. and MA students, with the aim of recognizing the best of each year in all streams. The scholarship is awarded from the second year.
Eligibility criteria:
Continuous completion:

  • For the second year scholarship: Must have completed semesters I and II without interruption.
  • For third year scholarships (B.Des./B.Tech. students): Must have completed semesters III and IV.
  • For fourth year scholarship (B.Des./B.Tech. students): Must have completed semesters V and VI.

Academic performance:

  • The student must have completed all relevant courses on the first attempt.
  • Must achieve the highest Annual Performance Index (YPI) for the semesters considered.

Disciplinary file: The student must not have been the subject of a major disciplinary measure from the Institute’s disciplinary committee (IDC).
Duration and benefits of the scholarship:
The IMS extends over two semesters: August-November and January-April, for a total of 8 months. Under this, students will receive a stipend of Rs. 500 per month for two semesters and full tuition fee waiver for both semesters.

Merit-and-means (McM) scholarship from the Institute:

The McM scholarship is awarded to non-SC/ST students enrolled in B.Tech., B.Des., M.Sc. or MA programs at the institute. It is granted strictly on the basis of merit and means, following the recommendations of the scholarship committee.
Eligibility criteria:
Parental income:

  • The annual income of the student’s parents should not exceed Rs. 4.5 lakhs (subject to government notifications).
  • Students whose tuition fee +2 exceeded Rs. 30,000 per annum are not eligible.

Student Eligibility:

  • First year students of B.Tech., B.Des., M.Sc. and MA are eligible.
  • For second, third and fourth year undergraduate students and second year M.Sc./MA students, a minimum CPI of 6.0 is required.
  • A maximum of 25% of non-SC/ST students of these programs can receive the scholarship, as per the statutes of the institution.

Selection criteria:
Points calculation: The selection process is based on a total of 100 points, calculated from parental income (60%) and merit (40%).
Weighting based on income:

  • Below Rs. 1,50,000: 50 points
  • Rs. 1,50,000 – Rs. 2,50,000: 47.5 points
  • Rs. 2,50,000 – Rs. 3,50,000: 45 points
  • Rs. 3,50,000 – Rs. 4,50,000: 42.5 points

Merit-based weighting: For second, third and fourth year students, merit is calculated by multiplying their GPI by five. For first-year students, merit is determined by dividing the percentage of marks obtained in the entrance examination by two.
Scholarship duration and benefits
The scholarship covers two semesters: August-November and January-April, for a total of 8 months. Under this, students will receive a stipend of Rs. 1,000 per month for two semesters with full tuition fee waiver for two semesters.

SC-ST scholarship

SC-ST Scholarship is awarded to all SC/ST students pursuing B.Tech., B.Des., M.Sc. or MA programs, based on their financial need.
Eligibility criteria:
Parental income:

  • The annual income of the student’s parents should not exceed Rs. 4.5 lakhs, subject to government notifications.
  • Students who have completed their +2 studies from schools whose annual tuition fees exceed Rs. 30,000 are not eligible.

Eligibility of Students: All B.Tech., B.Des., M.Sc. and MA students of SC/ST categories are eligible to apply.
Duration of the scholarship:
The scholarship is awarded for two semesters: August-November and January-April, for a total of 8 months.
Benefits:

  • A monthly allowance of Rs. 250 for two semesters (8 months).
  • Free basic menu in the hostel.
  • Exemption from rent for hostel rooms.
  • Full tuition fee waiver for all SC/ST students, whether availing SC-ST scholarship or not.
