Mummified body found in toilet during search for missing woman: police

Authorities have confirmed that a mummified body was found in the toilet of a California home while searching for a missing woman this summer.

Union City police said officers found the man’s body in the Appian Way home in August while searching for the missing woman, according to CW affiliate KRON and the East Bay Times.

Police were searching for a missing 95-year-old woman with Alzheimer’s disease when a family member asked them to check the house, CBS affiliate KPIX reported.

The woman was not inside the home, having moved to a nursing home two years prior, according to reports. But police found the mummified body of a man in the toilet.

Authorities described the body as “mummified” because it appeared to have dried before their arrival, according to KRON.

The man found dead is believed to be the woman’s 95-year-old son. Authorities believe he died of natural causes and that there was no foul play.

“It’s really strange that we find people in the bathroom,” UCPD Sergeant Brandon Hayward said, according to KRON.

A second man was found inside the home. He appeared to suffer from mental illness and had mold in one of his ears, according to KPIX and the Times. It appears to be the brother of the deceased.

A police report states that officers responding to the scene found the property littered with trash and a “notable presence” of flies inside the residence, as well as a foul odor.

“The backyard and front yard were filled with trash,” neighbor Bruce Chan said, according to KPIX. “It was filled with trash up to about 10 feet high. We always wondered about that because the place always seemed really scary.”

Union City Police Lt. Sergio Quintero confirmed to Times that an investigation is underway.

The ministry did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.
