Africa’s ‘city in the sea’ is set to become the world’s ‘new Great Wall’ | World | News

Nigeria is the most populous country in Africa with more than 230 million inhabitants.

Lagos, the country’s largest city, has a population of 23 million and is one of the most congested places in the world.

However, an ambitious new plan in the city plans to expand Lagos so that it can accommodate a staggering 88 million residents expected by 2100.

Over the past 100 years, Lagos has lost almost three kilometers of coastline to erosion.

The solution to this problem is the Eko Atlantic project, which aims to recover 10 square kilometers of land for construction.

Under this proposal, Lagos could be expanded with 10 new urban neighborhoods that will house more than 250,000 residents.

Engineers are even considering building what they call the “Great Wall of Lagos,” an eight-kilometer-long, 45-meter-wide structure that rises 18 meters from the ocean floor.

Construction of the project began in 2008 and by 2020, some buildings were already completed, including the Eko Pearl Towers.

The project is expected to be completed in 2040, according to reports.

The Eko Atlantic website states: “At 10 million square meters of reclaimed ocean land, protected by a 5.2-mile seawall, Eko Atlantic rivals Manhattan’s skyscraper district in size.

“It embodies self-sufficiency and sustainability with cutting-edge urban planning, power generation, pure water supply, advanced telecommunications, expansive roads and tree-lined streets.”

The website also boasts that Eko Atlantic is a “marvel of modern engineering and technology, and a testament to Nigeria’s rise on the world stage.”

He continues: “And the marine covering of the Great Wall of Lagos, which is being constructed more than two kilometers offshore, eight and a half meters above sea level, has exceeded 6 kilometers in length and now protects more than 6 million squares. meters from Eko Atlantic and Victoria Island.
