Youngkin calls for ARC funding for storm-damaged recreation areas in region

RICHMOND, Va. (WVVA) – Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin is seeking $1.3 million from the Appalachian Regional Commission to help with recovery efforts in outdoor recreation areas in southwest Virginia. Virginia.

It is part of the Hurricane Helene Outdoor Recreation Recovery Plan and the goal is to assess damage to vital outdoor recreation assets, develop detailed cost estimates and create a plan strategy for the reconstruction of critical infrastructure.

Impacts from the storm include damage to the Virginia Creeper Trail, New River Trail, Claytor Lake, accumulation of storm-related debris, shoreline erosion, and damage to boat ramps along the Clinch and New rivers. Many recreation areas also face downed trees, washed out trails, and unsafe conditions, creating significant challenges for restoration efforts and safe public access.

Led by Friends of Southwest Virginia, the project is designed to support rapid and effective recovery to allow public access.

Youngkin said outdoor recreation boosts tourism, supports local businesses and provides places for residents to connect with nature.

“This funding request to the Appalachian Regional Commission is a critical step in rebuilding and strengthening these assets after Hurricane Helen, helping our communities recover quickly and continue to thrive,” he said. he declared.
