Police chase ends in accident in Hamtramck that leaves 1 dead and 5 hospitalized

HAMTRAMCK, Mich. – A brief police chase in Hamtramck ended in a fatal crash Thursday.

It happened near the intersection of Conant and McNichols Road.

According to Hamtramck Police Chief Jamiel Altaheri, it started with some officers being assaulted during a traffic stop, which led to a chase that ended when the pursued vehicle ran a red light and hit several cars. Six vehicles were involved in the accident.

Police said five people were hospitalized and one person was killed in the crash.

“It’s a very tragic incident,” Altaheri said. “Very tragic. My condolences to the family of the person who was killed.

Michigan State Police and the Detroit Police Department are assisting in the investigation.
