Huntsville City Council Defers Utility Rate Increase

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WAFF) – Huntsville residents will have to wait at least two more weeks to find out if Huntsville Utilities will increase its electricity rates.

Huntsville City Council members decided to delay the vote until the next city council meeting on October 24. The proposed rate increase represented 5.3 percent of your electricity bill.

This is an increase that will be distributed in installments over the next 10 months.

Huntsville Utilities’ president and CEO blamed the increase on rising material costs and inflation.

In August, the Tennessee Valley Authority approved a 5.25 percent increase, these two increases are separate and will be combined.

“The first bill I paid wasn’t primarily mine, it was to help my mother pay a utility bill,” said Huntsville City Councilman Devyn Keith. “What I don’t see is a comparative needs assessment that someone is collectively looking at: My bill is 500 today, when you pass it, how much will my bill be in total?”
