Formal search begins for new WVU president

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (WDTV) – For approximately 17 years and two separate terms, Gordon Gee served as president of West Virginia University. However, in June 2025, the university will name his successor, WVU’s 27th president. A search committee comprised of 21 WVU faculty, alumni, staff and representatives will be involved in decision-making, with the WVU Board of Governors having the final say. Dr. Patrice Harris is vice-chair of the Board of Governors and chair of the search committee. When asked what type of person might be best suited for this role, she had this to say:

“Certainly from a big picture perspective, someone who has a vision for the future, someone who appreciates our commitment to our land-grant mission, that’s very important to us,” said Dr. Harris. “Someone who deeply appreciates the role that West Virginia University plays in the state as a whole and, finally, someone who is able to lead in alignment with WVU values, so someone who is a great communicator, of course.”

Wittkieffer, an executive search firm partnering with WVU in the search for No. 27, will release the presidential leadership profile and officially open the application process by Friday evening. At that time, interested individuals may nominate themselves or others they deem suitable for the position of President of West Virginia University. The search committee will then decide on 3-5 finalists to recommend to the Board of Directors, privately. The board of directors will announce the new president in spring 2025
