Bloomington Police-Fire Softball Game Raises $932 to Fight Polio

October 12, 1924: Toluca’s business interests and landowners were able to bring the Silk Maid Corset Co. of Chicago, a large industry, to this city. The majority of businessmen and residents generously subscribed with money and also put in a lot of work to secure this industry.

75 years ago

October 12, 1949: Sister M. Celine was almost overwhelmed Tuesday (Oct. 11) when Police Chief S. Clyde Hibbens and Fire Chief Roland Behrend presented her with a check for $932, the proceeds from the Sept. 7 softball game between police officers and firefighters. Sister Celine said the money would be used to purchase physiotherapy equipment for the polio ward at St. Joseph Hospital.

October 12, 1974: For the second time in 15 months, the Daily Pantagraph is taking steps to conserve newsprint. The latest conservation measure was prompted by a strike Friday by 1,000 men in logging operations at the Great Lakes Paper Company mill in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada. The strikers are demanding an increase in wages and benefits of approximately 60% over a two-year period.

25 years ago

October 12, 1999: The Illinois State University Redbirds football team rose to No. 6 in both The Sports Network and USA Today/ESPN national polls this week. Three other Gateway teams – Northern Iowa (No. 8), Western Illinois (No. 8) and Youngstown State (No. 9 in USA Today/ESPN and No. 10 in The Sports Network) – are also ranked in both polls.
