Urgent Warning: Community Vigilance Needed

In a dramatic update for residents of the North-West region, Eric Stoch, president of the North-West Umbrella Fire Protection Association, issued a stark warning of dangerously high temperatures and dry conditions expected over the coming days.

At 2:00 p.m. this Saturday, Stoch addressed the community, emphasizing the critical nature of the situation. “We are currently experiencing a crossover phenomenon, with temperatures exceeding 30 degrees. In Potchefstroom we are facing alarming temperatures between 38 and 42 degrees,” he said, highlighting the serious risk posed by current conditions.

With winds expected to exceed 30 km/h and humidity dropping to just 14%, the risk of fire has increased significantly. “This indicates an extremely dangerous situation that we are going to face,” Stoch warned, urging residents to adhere to precautionary measures.

The president’s message is clear: “No burning blocks, no fire breaks, and please don’t burn ashes.” He also warned against reckless behavior, noting: “Be very careful not to throw your cigarette butts into fields or from a moving vehicle, as this could cause forest fires, which are very dangerous.” »

Stoch’s call for vigilance extends to tools and equipment often used in outdoor work. “We also ask people not to work with brushcutters, grinders or welding machines,” he advised, stressing that even the smallest spark could start a catastrophic fire.

Community cooperation has been key to reducing fire damage this year. “Last year at this time we had lost about 1.2 million hectares, and this year we are at about 344,000 hectares that have been burned,” Stoch noted with cautious optimism. “This can only be achieved by working together with the community.”

As the threat looms, Stoch implores residents to act quickly at the first sign of smoke or fire. “Please contact your local fire service or contact us on 07 1007 8653,” he urged, emphasizing the importance of collective responsibility.

With the region’s livelihoods and food security at stake, Stoch’s impassioned appeal to the community highlights a critical moment. “We are very concerned about the lives, livelihoods and food security of the people of our province. Please work with us. Be safe out there.
