Google wants US judge’s decision on the App Store to be suspended

New York (Reuters): Google has asked a California federal judge to stay its sweeping court ruling forcing it to open its Play app store to greater competition.

In a court filing filed late Friday, Google said U.S. District Judge James Donato’s injunction order, which takes effect Nov. 1, would harm the company and introduce “serious security risks, security and privacy in the Android ecosystem.

The tech giant, a subsidiary of Alphabet, asked Donato to suspend the order while he appeals.

The judge issued the injunction Oct. 7 in a case brought by “Fortnite” maker Epic Games, which persuaded a federal jury last year that Google was illegally monopolizing the way consumers download apps on Android devices and which they pay for in-app transactions.

The judge’s order states that Google must allow users to download from competing third-party Android platforms or app stores and can no longer prohibit the use of in-app payment methods in competing apps. It also prohibits Google from making payments to device makers to pre-install its app store and from sharing revenue generated from the Play store with other app distributors.
