Latest news in the Middle East: Israel ‘reduces targets for attack on Iran’; US expresses ‘deep concern’ over attacks by UN peacekeepers | World News

We are suspending our live coverage of conflicts in the Middle East.

But before leaving, here is a recap of the main developments of the last 24 hours:

A fifth UN peacekeeper has been injured in Lebanon after being hit by gunfire, the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) said.

He was operated on and his condition is currently stable, the press release added, specifying that the origin of the fire is not yet known.

This is the fifth case where a UNIFIL soldier has been injured in southern Lebanon since Thursday.

Thirty-four UNIFIL contributing countries have signed a joint statement reaffirming the protection of peacekeepers in Lebanon and condemning the latest attacks against them.

Signatories to the letter include the United Kingdom, Spain, France and Italy.

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said he had expressed “deep concern” to his Israeli counterpart Yoav Gallant over the incident.

Speaking to Sky News, the former Lebanese prime minister said Israel’s actions amounted to war crimes.

Separately, the Israeli army said that Hezbollah launched more than 300 projectiles into the country from Lebanon this weekend.

The country yesterday celebrated Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar.

In Beirut, the speaker of the Iranian parliament visited the scene of an Israeli airstrike that killed and injured dozens of people.

Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf promised that Tehran would continue to support the struggle of the Lebanese and Palestinians against Israel.

In Tel Aviv, hundreds of protesters blocked a main highway, urging the Israeli government to negotiate with Hamas for the release of the hostages.
