BBC launches search for new sports commentators

BBC Sport is looking for new budding commentators to join its pool of iconic sports voices.

The BBC’s New Voices program returns to find the next generation of commentators. Successful candidates will receive training from the BBC, the UK’s most widely used sports broadcaster.

The program has already helped identify some of the industry’s most talented commentators, such as 2021 winner Claire Thomas.

Claire, who now regularly commentates on women’s rugby, said: “As someone with production experience, but relatively new to broadcasting, the New Voices program was the perfect catalyst – and it’s something I am extremely grateful. Just being selected gave me a tangible confidence boost, but it was in the training that I benefited the most.

“One-on-one sessions with a master of their trade, during top-flight matches, are an extraordinary resource. Looking back on it now, I can’t believe how lucky I was, really! – and I have never had such detailed or constructive feedback. This has undoubtedly accelerated my development – and has also left me perfectly placed for opportunities with BBC 5 Live, who are simply a pleasure to work for. The main things I learned? Be authentic, stay on top of the action, and preparation is king.

Alex Kay-Jelski, Director of BBC Sport, said: “Our sports coverage wouldn’t be the same without our incredible commentators. Whether it’s cricket, football, rugby, tennis or athletics, the voices that tell these stories are imperative to bringing the action to life. We are committed to finding and nurturing the best athletic talent and this program does just that. I can’t wait to see who the next generation of sportscasters will be.

To enter, interested applicants must send one minute of their commentary on a sport of their choice which includes a goal, try, point or basket to [email protected]

Applicants must be residents of the United Kingdom, aged 18 and over and include their name, date of birth and the county in which they reside.

The closing date is Friday 20 December 2024 and participants will be informed in early February 2025 whether they have successfully progressed to the next stage where they will speak with experts from BBC Sport.
