Battle of the Badges tournament raises over $10,000 for Special Olympics Kansas

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) – The annual Battle of the Badges kickball tournament kicked off at Hayden High School on October 13.

Teams included the Topeka Police Department, Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office, Topeka Fire Department, Shawnee County District Authority offices and the Kansas Highway Patrol. Each team had special guests who brought all the energy.

“Law enforcement has always had a special connection to the Special Olympics. I mean Special Olympics is about inclusion and just helping people who just need a little help to make them feel like they’re a part of something,” said Sgt. Dan Wilson of the Topeka Police Department.

The competition organized by the Law Enforcement Torch Run raises funds for Special Olympics Kansas.

Sergeant Wilson says the event is about giving back to the community that supports them throughout the year.

“We’ve raised money for different charities over the years, but through this we can see where it’s going and have personal interactions with the athletes,” said Sgt. Wilson.

The personal relationships with each Special Olympic athlete are a bond that law enforcement hopes to maintain for years to come.

“You won’t find a happier group.” Someone came up right before this interview and said “You’re going to do good” and I just thought about that kind of positive energy and really love. You can’t help us smile about it,” Shawnee County Prosecutor Mike Kagay said.

The Kansas Highway Patrol won the tournament and more than $10,000 was raised for Special Olympics Kansas.
