Togo and Benin owe Nigeria electricity debt of $5.79 million in second quarter – NERC

Bilateral international electricity customers from Togo and Benin owed Nigeria a total sum of $5.79 million in electricity debt as of the second quarter of 2024.

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission disclosed this during its latest 2024 second quarter.

According to NERC data, of the $15.60 million bill issued by the market operator between April and June 2024, international customers remitted only $9.81 million to the country.

This comes as foreign companies sourcing electricity from Nigeria are Para-SBEE in Benin Republic ($1.23 million), Transcorp-SBEE in Benin, Mainstream-NIGELEC in Togo ($1.09 million ) and Odukpani-CEET in Togo ($3.47 million). .

Accordingly, Para-SBEE in Benin Republic remitted 71.21 percent of the $4.29 million invoiced, Transcorp-SBEE in Benin remitted 100 percent of the $4.25 million invoiced; Mainstream-NIGELEC in Togo paid 69.72 on $3.59 million, and Odukpani-CEET remitted nothing during the period.

Recall that in the first quarter, none of the four international bilateral customers supplied by the electricity production companies made payment on the cumulative invoice of 14.19 million dollars issued by the market operator for the services rendered .

However, in the second quarter report, it was noted that some bilateral customers (domestic and international customers) had made payments for unpaid invoices from previous quarters.

“In total, international bilateral clients paid a total of $16.65 million; Transcorp-SBEE and Mainstream-NIGELEC have made payments for all outstanding invoices from previous quarters,” the report reveals.

“The four international bilateral clients supplied by Gencos in the NESI have made a payment of $9.81 million towards the cumulative invoice of $15.60 million issued by the market operator for services rendered in the second quarter of 2024/ T2, which translates to a transfer performance of 62.88 percent,” he said. added.
