Consumer Commission urges compliance after suspected food poisoning deaths

The country has seen a recent surge in cases, with Gauteng officials on Sunday confirming the death of a sixth child following an alleged incident in Soweto.

Three children also died in the Eastern Cape, although the producer of the porridge they consumed found no traces of contaminants in the product.

Phetho Ntaba, of the commission, indicates that they will visit these two provinces this week.

“We also work with other regulators in the field, such as municipalities and health inspectors, where they enforce their regulations and bye-laws.

“For our part, we monitor compliance with consumer protection law, for example by examining labeling issues. If products are not correctly labeled, we then engage with the supplier.”

Ntaba says they also work with health inspectors to ensure food products are correctly labeled.

She says there have been reports that some suppliers in Limpopo and the Free State have falsified labels.

Ntaba urged consumers to report any suspicious food products to the NCC.

“We continue to encourage suppliers, whether general, formal or informal, to ensure compliance with the provisions of the Consumer Protection Act and ensure that food or goods marketed to South African consumers meet the less than required standards, including regulations.”
