Airdrie imposes lifetime ban on fan following alleged racist abuse of East Kilbride player

A supporter has been banned for life by Airdrieonian Football Club following allegations of racist abuse directed at an opposition player.

The Championship side hosted East Kilbride on Saturday October 12, in the fourth round of the Scottish Challenge Cup.

The Lowland League side secured a shock penalty shootout victory over the second-tier side. However, they confirmed earlier today that Portuguese midfielder Joao Balde was the victim of alleged racist abuse at the end of the match.

The club’s statement posted on social media read: “East Kilbride Football Club is aware of an incident involving our player, Joao Balde, which occurred during Saturday’s match.

“We are currently in dialogue with the Airdrie Football Club, who have opened an investigation into this matter.

“We are confident that Airdrie will address this situation appropriately and thoroughly.” Our thoughts are with Joao, who was exceptional on Saturday.

Kilby boss Mick Kennedy also took to social media, saying there was “no place for this in society”.

He wrote: “There is no place for this in society, let alone football, I am sure Airdrie FC will investigate and take action against the individual involved. It is also surprising that the referee sanctioned one of our players for his defense of his teammate.

Airdrie has since released a statement confirming the individual involved has been banned and evidence has been submitted to police.

It read: “The club is aware of an incident which occurred following Saturday’s match against East Kilbride.

“The perpetrator of the incident, during which an East Kilbride player was subjected to racist abuse, has been identified and sentenced to a life ban.

“Airdrieonians Football Club has a zero tolerance policy towards racism. All information gathered and witness statements have been passed to Police Scotland who will now take control of this matter.

Police Scotland have been contacted for comment.
