Former GOP congressman Fred Upton, who voted to impeach Trump over the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol, supports Harris’ candidacy for president.

He joins a growing list of other Republicans, including Adam Kinzinger and Liz Cheney, who have backed the Democratic nominee amid concerns about Trump’s role in the unrest.

“Today, I join more than 30 former Republican members of Congress in publicly refusing to support Donald Trump, and I’m proud to say I’ve already cast my vote for Kamala Harris,” Upton told reporters on Thursday.

He added: “I’ve never voted for a Democrat for president and frankly never thought I would, but he is a strong, dedicated public servant. He’s running to bring people together, strengthen our economy and protect our fundamental freedoms.”

Upton, who served 30 years in the House of Representatives, said heated fights over policy have always been the norm, but “with Trump in office, politics has become more personal, angrier and more divisive than ever before.”
