Trump and his allies spread false claims about non-citizen voting and World Series preview: Morning Review

Donald Trump and his allies are spreading a new “big lie” ahead of Election Day. The World Series matchup for the ages has begun. And a new report warns that online gambling poses a public health threat.

Here’s what you need to know today.

How Trump is using a new ‘big lie’ to undermine the 2024 election

In tiny boxes, hundreds of people, most of them white, meet weekly in online video conferences to share compelling evidence of a non-existent problem: a left-wing conspiracy to “force illegals to vote,” as Jeff Vega put it, a conservative Latino activist from Michigan said at an August meeting.

Attendees reportedly included a Wisconsin state lawmaker, a former Trump administration official and a U.S. congressman. They discuss ideas on how to deal with this perceived threat and encourage each other to go as far as possible within the limits of the law. Reporters are prohibited from attending meetings held by the Election Integrity Network, but recordings have been leaked to media outlets including NBC News.

Unlike 2020, when Trump and his supporters made a series of false allegations of election interference (many of which were rejected by the courts), Republicans this election cycle are focused almost entirely on the specter of non-citizen voting, a claim all the more compelling because that it is difficult to prove that something is not happening.

It is illegal for non-citizens to vote in federal elections. It’s also incredibly rare.

But the false belief that this is happening at a pace that could tip the election toward Democrats who want to steal it (again) is coupled with two major themes in the Republican messaging: that America’s borders and elections are insecure.

Senior reporter Brandi Zadrozny took a deep dive into Big Lies 2.0, how it’s spreading, and the real-life impact it’s already had.

Seven Trump town halls have been moderated by women since August. This is no coincidence.

New NBC News poll of Gen Z voters shows a significant gender gap when it comes to who supports Harris and who supports Trump.

Will Democrats be able to gain control of the House of Representatives even if Trump is elected president? It comes down to several critical races.

If Republicans lose their House majority, some in the party think Speaker Mike Johnson will lose his leadership role.

A once-in-a-lifetime World Series

The 2024 World Series between the Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Yankees gets underway tonight—and it’s safe to say it’s a matchup for the ages. The teams haven’t met in the World Series since 1981, and there are plenty of other stats that make this series especially exciting. And don’t forget about the star quality of each team. Sports reporter Rohan Nadkarni explains the meaning of this year’s fall classics and what to look out for:

What makes the 2024 World Series so exciting? This is a matchup between the best team in the American League (the Yankees) and the best team in the National League (the Dodgers). In other words, these teams led their leagues in regular-season wins for only the third time this millennium and only the second time after an unabridged season. This is also the 12th meeting between the Yankees and Dodgers in Fall Classic history, the most of any two teams, and the first since 1981.

Is this series more than a showdown between two of baseball’s greatest sluggers, Shohei Ohtani and Aaron Judge? Yes, it’s much more than that. Both teams are loaded with stars, including Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman of the Dodgers and Juan Soto and Giancarlo Stanton of the Yankees. And both franchises paid a premium for their rosters. New York and Los Angeles ranked second and third, respectively, in wages this season.

Which team do you think has the advantage? In my opinion, the Dodgers have become a more complete team in the postseason. The Yankees have better starting pitchers, but the Dodgers persevered through injuries and had more consistency in their offense.

Are there any other storylines that you will see in the series? I’ll be watching to see if the Yankees can return to form, as their postseason batting and batting average was lower than their regular season average. Entering Game 1, the team is hitting just .237 while Judge is hitting under .200 and .161. I’ll also be keeping an eye on how often Dodgers manager Dave Roberts will have to rely on his bullpen throughout the entire nine innings. Los Angeles has pitched three bullpen-only games this postseason, going 2-1 on those nights.

District Attorney seeks Menendez brothers’ sentencing review

Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón is expected to file papers today recommending resentencing of the Menendez brothers for the murders of their parents, a move that paves the way for their potential release from prison. Gascón will recommend eliminating the possibility of life in prison without parole from the case of Lyle and Erik Menendez and resentencing them for murder. Supreme Court Judge will make the final decision.

Growth of online gambling increases threat to public health, report warns

The days when gambling was simply “people playing a game with cards at a table” are gone, and with the rise of online betting, gambling has become a public health threat, a new report warns. To compile the report, the medical journal The Lancet convened a gambling commission of 22 members from a dozen countries who reviewed existing research and surveys on the prevalence, impact and harms of gambling. The Commission determined that current regulations are insufficient to protect the public.

In addition to financial losses, gambling can cause people to lose jobs, relationships or health, and increase the risk of suicide and domestic violence, the report says. Even those who do not have a gambling addiction suffer from them.

The report coincidentally came on the eve of the World Series, one of the biggest sporting events in the United States. Since 2018, 38 states and Washington, D.C. have legalized sports betting, and apps like DraftKings and FanDuel allow users to bet on scores, teams, players and more. Read more about the report.

Personnel selection: Gay Republicans rally in support of Trump

Juan Diego Reyes for NBC News

For weeks, I’ve been racking my brain trying to find a story about an elusive demographic: LGBTQ Republicans. So when a group of gay Trump supporters announced they were gathering in swing states to attract LGBTQ voters, I quickly flew to Charlotte, North Carolina, to check things out.

There were no rainbows during the so-called “Trump UNITY” tour, straight people far outnumbered gay people in attendance, and LGBTQ-specific policy issues were barely discussed. Among the few LGBT voters there, none of this seemed to matter. One participant told me that it was time for LGBTQ people to “move away from the victim mentality.”
