Jaguar has an interesting strategy for a must-win game

The Jacksonville Jaguars are 2-5 and need improvement in almost every area of the field. However, they have won two of their last three games.

Part of what has helped the Jaguars offense play better the last few weeks is their ability to play well after offensive coordinator Press Taylor no longer called plays from a predetermined playlist.

Scripted offenses to start plays are not uncommon in the National Football League. This allows coordinators to use what they have learned from opponents’ tendencies regarding film and the game plan for it throughout the week.

However, this advantage does not last long until offensive coordinators are forced to make adjustments as opposing teams know their tendencies and often change things up when facing a new opponent.

Several times this season, the Jaguars offense has played well when starting the game as scripted.

This can be seen in the way they have taken early leads in several games this season. However, once the Jaguars get past these routine plays, they begin to falter, as evidenced by their dominance in multiple losses this season.

Taylor says the team can only mix things up if their original plan works effectively. Otherwise, success is much more difficult.

“That’s the way it is,” Taylor said. “I mean, again, we’re not going to do this unless we’re efficient. I mean, it started with two 12-yard runs, a nine-yard run, a five-yard run, six. If it’s just one, two, three, you probably won’t keep doing it. It just doesn’t make sense. This is not in your favor.”

“Or you’re two points behind, you’re not going to do that. That’s why it’s great when you can do it because our guys felt it and Tank (RB Tank Bigsby) felt it. He seems to relax and begins to see things even better. For the most part, these were recurring concepts, things that we used throughout the game that just seemed beneficial to us.

Against the New England Patriots, the Jaguars were able to figure out what approach would work best for them in that particular matchup.

Taylor noted that the Jaguars have played different styles of football with varying degrees of success. Taylor says the forwards’ mentality is to do whatever it takes to win every week.

“So our guys fed off that and did a good job.” Taylor said. “But I think in this league you have to be able to win any way you can. I think we won a couple weeks ago by throwing the ball 380 yards or something like that. Then we won this week with 16 runs in a row. What can you do to win this game this week? And it is changing.

“You’re going to play differently in the first quarter than you do in the fourth quarter. That’s how the game goes. We will continue to try to do what we think is working for now. We’re not going to do something just because we ran it 16 times and it was cool. So let’s do this in every game. This doesn’t make sense. So our goal is simply to win the game. We will do everything possible for this.”
