Mainz’s poor home form continues after draw with Borussia Mönchengladbach

MAINZ, Germany — Tim Kleindienst scored and Borussia Monchengladbach came back from conceding an own goal to draw 1-1 with Mainz in the Bundesliga on Friday.

Stefan Lainer’s own goal 10 minutes into the second half gave Mainz the lead and increased their chances of a first home win in five games.

But Kleindienst slipped between two defenders and headed home two minutes later.

His sixth goal puts him behind only Harry Kane and Eintracht Frankfurt’s Omar Marmush in the Bundesliga scoring table.

The result was another disappointment for Mainz, which saw their top scorer Jonathan Burkardt limp off the field in the 20th minute.

Friday’s point was only the second of a possible 15 at home and the home side had to reward goalkeeper Robin Zentner with a fine display that thwarted the Monchengladbach strikers on several occasions.

Mönchengladbach moved up to ninth place, with Mainz three places behind.
