The suspect in the murder at the center of the events appeared in court and pleaded not guilty

JACKSON, Tennessee. The man allegedly responsible for shooting nine people and killing one woman at a north Jackson convention center early Sunday appeared in court Friday.

Matthew Berry is charged with murder as well as attempted second-degree murder.

Berry appeared in court virtually. His lawyer, Michael Burton, spoke on his behalf.

Berry has pleaded not guilty to the charges. The state is seeking Berry to be held without bail.

“The judge, given the nature of the charges and the facts set forth in the warrant, the state requests that he be detained, specifically, on the charge of capital murder,” the prosecution said.

“He will be held without bail. No bail, yes,” Judge Blake Anderson said.

According to the warrant, on Oct. 20 around 1 a.m., the Jackson Police Department responded to 23-10 North Highland Avenue in reference to a shooting. When police arrived at the scene, they found nine people with gunshot wounds.

Two victims were airlifted to a Memphis hospital. Lar’Kuria Roberson was shot in the abdomen and forearm and later died as a result of her injuries.

One of the victims was shot twice in the back and was later paralyzed as a result of the shooting. Officers processed the crime scene and found eight spent 9mm casings and one .38-caliber live round.

According to preliminary forensic findings, all eight spent cartridges collected were fired from the same firearm. Among the six men, Berry was positively identified as the man who opened fire on the crowd of people at the center of the events.

The shooting happened inside the business during what JPD said was a large party.
