Chris Sutton admits watching the Celtic star play at Atalanta was a ‘pleasant surprise’

Master class on defense in Bergamo characterized by the will and determination to fight to the end, and this spirit was not exemplified better than by Trusty.

The 26-year-old played alongside Liam Scales at the heart of Celtic’s defense and produced his best performance in the famous green and white team.

Celtic player Auston Trusty caught Sutton’s eye.

His defensive authority was second to none, and he won almost every aerial duel in which he participated. Trusty was absolutely hard and Sutton rightly praised him.

I write in my weekly Daily record In the column, Sutton was impressed by Trusty’s apparent “willingness” to defend for 96 minutes in Italy.

The Celtic hero wrote: “The Irishman (Liam Scales) and Auston Trusty were excellent at centre-back and I have to say the American’s performance was a pleasant surprise.

“The pair showed a defensive will that I just didn’t see in Dortmund.”

Sutton welcomes numerous Celtic stars after Atalanta

Sutton continued and said: “I can’t remember the last game where Alistair Johnstone defended with such caution in terms of his position.

“The Canadian rarely made breakthroughs and was absolutely right to stay in position, in contact with his central defenders. Same with Alex Valle, who remained on his side alongside Liam Scales.

“The midfield guys were more disciplined. Callum McGregor, Arne Engels and Reo Hatate remained mostly flat, narrow and compact, while Paulo Bernardo and Luke McCowan were also excellent players, adding even more energy to the opposition.

“(Kasper) Schmeichel just oozes calm and, although it didn’t look flashy, the save with his feet from Mario Pasalic was top notch, as was the positioning to parry Mateo Retegui’s shot.

“Of course, this is a good profit. All Dortmund’s shots hit the net, while Atalanta’s best chances either hit the crossbar, headed straight towards Schmeichel, or missed the target.”
