Labor Party suspends MP Mike Amesbury after video shows him punching a man in the street | Politics news

Mike Amesbury was suspended by the Labor Party after CCTV footage showed him punching a man in the street.

A Labor Party spokesman said: “Deputy Mike Amesbury was assisting Cheshire Police with their investigation into the incident which occurred on Friday evening.

“As these investigations are currently ongoing, the Labor Party has administratively suspended Mr Amesbury’s membership of the Labor Party pending the outcome of the investigation.”

New video, received via MailOnline On Sunday afternoon, the Runcorn and Helsby MP was shown punching a man who fell to the floor and then punching him several times.

Three members of the public could then be seen to approach the two men and intervene.

A Cheshire Police spokesman said: “A 55-year-old man was voluntarily interviewed by police under caution in connection with this incident. He has since been released pending further investigation.”

“Mike Amesbury needs to answer questions about his actions and it is right that they are thoroughly investigated,” a Tory spokesman said.

This happened after earlier shots, which went viral on social media on Saturdayshowed Mr Amesbury shouting at the man as he lay on the floor and saying: “You will never threaten me again.”

Mr Amesbury pointed to the man and added: “Yes, I am (the MP), yes, and you will never threaten an MP again, will you?”

In a statement on Saturday, the MP said he felt “threatened in the street after a night out with friends” and added that he had “contacted Cheshire Police himself to report what happened during this incident.”

“I will not be making any further public comments but will of course co-operate with any inquiries if requested by Cheshire Police,” he added.

Police previously said officers were called at 2.48am on Saturday to reports of an attack on Main Street in Frodsham.

Labor Party He previously said he was aware of the incident and that Mr Amesbury, who has been an MP since 2017, would “co-operate with any inquiries” made by police.

Asked whether Labor was investigating, Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson told Sky’s. Sunday Morning with Trevor Phillips program: “Mike Amesbury… went to the police.

“He is cooperating with any investigation they want to do,” she continued. “It’s a matter for the police and we want to let them do the job.”

Sky News has approached Amesbury and the Labor Party for comment.
