Cellphone video helps deputies identify inmates smuggling inside W. Glenn Cambell Detention Center

DARLINGTON COUNTY, SC (WMBF) – Two inmates at the W. Glenn Cambell Detention Center are facing new charges after a cell phone video sent to the detention center led to a search.

The Darlington County Sheriff’s Office said it received the video that appeared to have been taken with a cell phone inside the detention center. An inmate could be seen smoking something during the recording. Police used the footage to identify the detainee as Jameare Nero.

Nero was arrested in April 2024 after allegedly murdering a woman in his car. He is now accused of contraband in the establishment.

Later, a search was conducted in the detention center where they found a cell phone, two makeshift “rods” and some prescription pills in the possession of another inmate.

Based on the search, Shane Brown was also charged with contraband and two counts of carrying or concealing a weapon by an inmate.

DCSO said security improvements have been made to reduce the amount of contraband entering the facility, but it is an ongoing problem for all facilities. Improvements include new cameras, fencing in the employee parking lot and escorts of employees to their cars.

The sheriff’s office said it recently intercepted a package that was thrown over the fence before it could enter the facility.

“There are many good men and women at the Darlington County Sheriff’s Office as well as the W. Glenn Campbell Detention Center who work very hard every day for the citizens of Darlington County and we will continue to do so,” the sheriff’s office said. said in a press release.

DCSO said more search-related charges could be likely once the cellphone data is analyzed and extracted.
