Water system repairs trigger boil advisory in Kalamazoo neighborhood

CITY, Mich. (WOOD) — A boil water advisory was issued Tuesday for a Kalamazoo neighborhood while the city conducts work on the water system.

The advisory is in effect for several properties along Woodheath Avenue near Old Colony Road; Grosse-Pointe Street; and Phorncroft, Chalfonte, Grand Marais and Dukeshire avenues.

Anyone living in the affected area should boil their water for two minutes before consuming it. It is possible to bathe in water without boiling it.

The notice was issued because repairs were being made to a water gate valve on Lorraine Avenue, which caused a drop in pressure in the system, the city said. Such pressure drops can allow bacteria to enter the system.

The boil water advisory is a precautionary advisory; no bacteria had been found in the system as of Tuesday. Officials say tests confirming the water’s safety should be back soon. They expect to lift the advisory by Friday.
