Vacations are often more about experiences than location.

Whether it’s relaxing in the woods or sipping coffee on the beach, traveling is a break from the daily grind.

Where the bed and breakfast industry shines is hospitality. That personal touch is what visitors crave, said Martin Horner, co-owner of the nationally recognized Wickwood Inn in Saugatuck.

“They really want to feel taken care of. They want to feel like they’re in someone’s home. They wanted something that wasn’t a big box hotel,” Horner said.

For those looking for a home away from home and an intimate local experience, there is a new website listing more than 70 Michigan bed and breakfasts.

From a lighthouse on the tip of the Upper Peninsula to a 2-acre organic farm just a mile from Lake Michigan, the options span the entire state.

The new website, michbnb.com, categorizes accommodations by cities, regions and amenities. It also has a tab of hostels for sale for future owners.

The website is organized by the Michigan Bed & Breakfast Association and features its members. The trade association represents the best quality-inspected inns and B&Bs in the state of Michigan, according to Pure Michigan.
