Lions’ Jameson Williams accepts 2-game PED suspension from NFL, says he did not knowingly take banned substance

Detroit Lions speedy wide receiver Jameson Williams has been suspended two games by the NFL for violating the league’s policy on performance-enhancing drugs.

Williams initially planned to appeal the suspension, but he released a statement Thursday ahead of Week 8 saying he accepted his fate.

However, he still doesn’t understand where the suspension comes from.

“This week, I was informed by the NFL that I had been suspended for violating the performance-enhancing substances policy,” Williams said in a statement released by his agency to X. “The news was a shock total surprise because I’m still trying to understand.

“I don’t take supplements or vitamins and am overly cautious even though I take over-the-counter medications. At no time have I taken anything with the intent of cheating or seeking an unfair advantage. I understand that I am responsible for everything that goes into my body and I must take responsibility in this case.

“I have nothing but love and respect for this game, my teammates, my coaches, the Lions organization and the city of Detroit. It is disappointing to accept this suspension, and it will hurt me a lot. “Being away from the team as they prepare this week. So, out of respect for my teammates, this will be the last time I address this subject.”

ESPN reported Monday that Williams was facing a potential suspension. He was at the Lions’ practice Wednesday, although head coach Dan Campbell told reporters afterward that the team did not expect Williams to be active against the Tennessee Titans on Sunday.

Campbell spoke about Williams’ situation.

“I trust this kid. I trust him,” Campbell told reporters via ESPN. “And unfortunately, you have to pay for your sins. If something happens and this happens, so be it. But I know this, we hung the rope on the way up. We can’t wait for anyone.

“And over a year ago he started climbing and he came right up to us. And maybe he lost his grip, but he’ll come back up. That rope is still there. It’s attached to us, and he’s fine, but he’s part of this team and I trust him.

Campbell is referring to another suspension Williams served last season for four games without pay for violating the league’s gaming policy.

The difference here is that Williams, in his third season after the Lions took him 12th overall from Alabama in 2022, was in the midst of a breakout campaign as a more consistent part of the offense .

He’s already broken his career high in receiving yards with 361 on 17 receptions with three touchdowns in six games, including four starts.
