Rain alert in Chennai: Schools, colleges to close in 4 districts for tomorrow | News from India

Amid heavy rainfall in the state and forecast of more downpours tomorrow, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MP Stalin on Tuesday announced holidays for schools and colleges in four districts.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy to very heavy rains in the state. Chief Minister MK Stalin on Tuesday announced that schools and colleges would remain closed in four districts.

Amid this warning, the state has issued an advisory to all IT professionals to work from home in the affected region from October 15 to 18, 2024.

The Regional Meteorological Center (RMC) has issued a red alert in many areas of Chennai. The weather department predicted 20 cm of rain in a single day during the monsoon.


CM publishes an opinion

The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister issued an order after chairing a meeting at the state secretariat on Monday morning. The CM has asked IT companies to advise their employees to work from home (WFH) between October 15 and 18, 2024.

CM Stalin asked officials to deploy NDRF and SDRF teams in vulnerable areas in advance to rescue people in case of floods.

All district in-charge officers have been directed to reach their designated districts and coordinate monsoon preparedness with the respective district administrations planning flood relief operations.


IMD predicts rain

The weather department predicts that several areas are likely to experience heavy rains, such as Dharamapuri, Salem, Nilgiris and Erode. Due to the arrival of the northeast monsoon by October 15 or 16, capital city Chennai may experience heavy rains.

The weather department has forecast heavy rains in several districts of the state for October 14.

Several areas such as Harmapuri, Salem, Nilgiris, Erode, Namakkal, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Tiruchirapalli, Karur, Tiruppur, Coimbatore, Dindigul, Pudukkottai, Nagapattinam, Sivagangai and Ramanathapuram districts may experience heavy rains.

Among other details, the IMD predicts that between October 12 and 16, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal are likely to experience isolated heavy rains which would be extreme on October 14 and 15.

An orange alert was issued for these dates in the region and the population was warned of potential flooding and waterlogging.

IMD also said, “Isolated heavy to very heavy rain is expected over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal between October 12 and 16, with the most intense showers likely on October 14 and 15. An orange alert was issued from October 14 to 16. “.

Fishermen are also advised to avoid going to sea until October 17 due to rough sea conditions and gusty winds.
